The UMinho Philosophy Students' Conference is organised by the Philosophy Department and the Philosophy Students' Association at the University of Minho. This year's Conference is supported by the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS) and the Centre for Research in Economics and Management (NIPE) at the University of Minho.

ORGANISING COMMITTEE
Joana PintoJoana Pinto is a jurist and researcher in Political Philosophy, with a master's degree in Political Philosophy and a bachelor's degree in Law. She has forthcoming papers on the crossover between theories of political legitimacy and theories of normative partidarism, namely in the journals Ethics, Politics & Society with the title “The Two Faces of Political Parties: How They Can Both Help and Hinder Rawls’ Public Reason”, and in the Brazillian Political Science Review with the title “Rawlsian Public Reason and Climate Change: A Blueprint for Integrationist Justice”.
Her research interests in political philosophy range between theories of democracy, theories of political legitimacy and theories of distributive justice, bridging the gap between ideal and non-ideal theory. |
Catarina NevesCatarina Neves is currently working on her PhD in Philosophy with a thesis on the philosophical justification of Unconditional Basic Income entitled “Justifying an Unconditional Basic Income: reciprocity, productive justice and the impact of UBI in the labor market”. Her project is funded by FCT (reference SFRH/BD/144495/2019). She is also a teaching assistant at Nova School of Business and Economics, currently lecturing the course on ‘Ethics’.
She is also the co-author of a book on basic income experiments – Basic Income Experiments. A Critical Examination of Their Goals, Contexts, and Methods (2022) – published by Palgrave Macmillan. |
Jorge MateusJorge Mateus is currently a doctoral researcher at the Centre for Ethics, Politics, and Society at the University of Minho. Currently, conducting research in the areas of Social and Political Philosophy, History of Political Thought, and Bioethics.
In his doctoral thesis, he worked the transhumanist thought and the ethics of human enhancement in general. He developed an approach aimed at grounding the moral permissibility of biomedical interventions in a theory of human nature and a theory of well-being that he refers to as “human nature developmentalism”. In previous research, he explored issues of distributive justice and property rights, particularly focusing on the libertarian theories of Robert Nozick and Hillel Steiner. He has a significant research interest in the philosophical and ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and the Internet of Bodies. Apart from research in these areas, he has a keen personal interest with the political-philosophical conservative and reactionary thought of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history and political-philosophical ideas of socialism, and Patristics. Eugénia AzevedoEugénia Azevedo is a first-year master's student in Political Philosophy at the University of Minho. She received a bachelor's degree in Philosophy at the Catholic University of Portugal. She currently teaches Philosophy at a secondary school level and aims to contribute to the dialogue on the importance of environmental responsibility.
Luís CerqueiraLuís Cerqueira is a first-year student of the bachelor's degree in Philosophy at the University of Minho. Hailing from Barcelos, after completing secondary school he organized night-time events. Now he has decided to leave the bustle of nightlife behind and fully dedicate himself to this area of knowledge. His personal interests include moral philosophy and epistemology.
João Ribeiro MendesJoão Ribeiro Mendes is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Minho, an Integrated Researcher at CEGOT-Center of Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (Group 1: Nature and Environmental Dynamics) at the University of Coimbra, and the president of the Institute for Anthropocene Studies, selected by the European Commission to be part of the Mission for Climate Change Adaptation network.
His teaching and research activities primarily focus on the Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Technology, and Anthropocene Studies. He is the author of a book on Ian Hacking's Experimental Realism (2015), co-editor of two books on Philosophy of Technology (2018, 2019), and co-editor of two books on Anthropocene Studies (2019, 2022). He has published dozens of articles, critical reviews, and book chapters and serves as a co-editor for Anthropocenica: Journal of Anthropocene Studies and Ecocriticism. |
Aysenur GünayAyşenur Günay is a first-year master’s student in Political Philosophy at the University of Minho. She received a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and completed a minor in Political Studies at the Middle East Technical University. Her interest lies in applied ethics and political philosophy, in particular, moral and legal status of nonhuman animals.
Lucas BarrosLucas Barros is a third-year student of the bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Secretary of the Board of the Philosophy Students' Association at the University of Minho. His personal interests include philosophy of language and theories of truth, alongside recent readings on philosophy of nature and Marxist approaches to ecology.
Roberto MerrillRoberto Merrill is Assistant Professor in Philosophy and Head of Department of Philosophy, at the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Minho, where he also coordinates the MA in Political Philosophy.
He is also a researcher at the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS), where he co-coordinates (with Stuart White, Oxford University) the UBIEXP project on UBI experiments (website here: https://ubiexperiments.weebly.com/) and the PREDPOD project (with Alan Thomas, University of York) on pre-distribution and property-owning democracy (website here: https://predpod.weebly.com/) He is Associate Researcher at CEVIPOF (Sciences Po-Paris) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Research Committee on Political Philosophy of the International Political Science Association. Dr. Merrill research interests within political philosophy include liberal neutrality, perfectionism and value pluralism, as well as contemporary theories of distributive justice. He published in 2019 a book on Rendimento básico incondicional : uma defesa da liberdade . Edições 70. (Prize by the Portuguese Society of Philosophy for best essay in philosophy for 2018-2019) and in 2022 a book on UBI experiments: Basic Income Experiments: A Critical Examination of their Goals, Contexts, and Methods, Palgrave Macmillan. He is currently working on a book manuscript on pre-distribution and property-owning democracy. |

PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINHO
The Philosophy Department at the University of Minho is responsible for the teaching projects within the field of Philosophy in the University of Minho: the BA in Philosophy, the MA in Political Philosophy, and the PhD in Philosophy. The Department works closely with two research centres integrated within the School of Arts and Humanities at UMinho: the Centre for Ethics, Politics and Society (CEPS) and the Centre of Humanistic Studies at the University of Minho (CEHUM).
The Philosophy Department attributes great importance to the dialogue between Philosophy and other areas of culture: the Arts and the Humanities, History and the Social Sciences, as well as the Natural Sciences and Technologies. |
Hence, its projects comprehend the different fields of Philosophy: Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics, Political Philosophy, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of Technology – with greater emphasis on contemporary approaches.

PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINHO
The Philosophy Students' Association of the University of Minho is the representative organ of all students in the degrees related to Philosophy: the BA in Philosophy, the MA in Political Philosophy, and the PhD in Philosophy.
It aims to contribute to increasing the quality, seriousness and depth of the education provided to students, the promotion of Philosophy and the creation of a philosophical community within the University. In keeping with these goals, it organises various events throughout the year, fostering dialogue and cooperation between students of the degrees related to Philosophy. |
CENTRE FOR ETHICS, POLITICS AND SOCIETY (CEPS)
CEPS is the only research centre in Portugal exclusively dedicated to the areas of Political Philosophy and Ethics. The Centre brings together PhD researchers, post-doctoral researchers and other associated researchers in these areas of knowledge.
Members of the Centre work on topics such as distributive justice, human rights, immigration and tolerance, unconditional basic income and property-owning democracy, democracy and the public interest, political rhetoric and populism, anarchism, feminism, civic virtues, animal and environmental ethics, human enhancement, ethics of war, and various issues in the history of moral and political philosophy.

The Centre publishes Ethics, Politics & Society, an open-access, peer-reviewed international journal that publishes high-quality contributions in the Centre’s areas of expertise.
The Centre also organises an intensive series of international events, including the Braga Meetings on Ethics and Political Philosophy, the Summer School in Political Philosophy and Public Policy, and the Programme of Research Seminars.
The international panel of the Foundation for Science and Technology that evaluated the Centre graded its activities as “Very Good”.
